World Literature

This course emphasizes; through a Christian worldview; skills and strategies for reading, analyzing, talking about and writing about some of the great works of World Literature. We will be examining how the works reflect the social, political, and moral issues during the times in which the works were written. As well as examining the author's background and supplemental materials that help to reflect the material and topics at hand.

Some of the works you can expect to read are:

The Kings James Bible

Shakespeare – Various plays

Excerpts from The Iliad or The Odyssey -Homer

Excerpts from Ulysses and The Dubliners – James Joyce

Excerpts from On the Road – Jack Kerouac

Short stories by Jorge Luis Borges

Crime and Punishment – Fyoder Dostoevsky

Short stories from A Sportman’s Notebook – Ivan Turgenev

Excerpts from Faust- Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Excerpts from The Canterbury Tales – Geoffrey Chaucer

Excerpts from the works of Cormac McCarthy

Excerpts from Don Quixote – Miguel de Cervantes

Excerpts from War and Peace or Anna Karenina – Leo Tolstoy

This is by no means a complete list and titles may change due to student interests and time restraints.   Students are asked to purchase their own copies of the novels selected and will be given ample time to get copies ahead of time. They are easily found in bookstores or on sites such as Amazon or Thriftbooks. Library copies are also an option but may not be optimal for taking notes as highlighting or underlining will not be allowed. Tutor will make copies or email copies of shorter works to students to help limit costs.

Supply Fee:  To help cover the cost of materials, including printer paper and ink, it is asked that each student contributes $20.00 towards the cost of materials/supplies. This fee will be included with your tuition cost.

Thank you.

Kyle Woitas

Tutor

Hello,

My name is Kyle Woitas. I am a life-long reader and lit-lover (especially American and Russian). I have been working with children (k-12) for several years and always enjoy their creativity and enthusiasm. I am married, with two children. One of my great joys is reading classic books to my children and sharing my love of literature with them. I am looking forward to geeking out with you and exploring the structure, philosophy, morality, and other fascinating aspects of the great books of World Literature and poetry through a Christian worldview. It is my goal to not only provide a Christ-centered framework through which to view, and read, the great works, but to also help foster a love of reading and thinking deeply about literature.
